Peculiar Landscapes: Brooke P. Alexander

The paintings in Peculiar Landscapes linger between reality, memory, and invention.  The interiors and exteriors look not only at the expected, but also seek to wander and wonder more deeply.  There are shadows and burrows to hide away in, fields and beds to lie in, animals to encounter, and cakes to devour.  The figures who live in these places are uneasily known.  They are consumed, unearthed, and held in equal measure by the spaces.  Many of these moments have been observed from life, and thus strive to slow sight, to reveal the oddity of vision. Yet they drift between fact and fiction, and the relationships between the two are never fully resolved — understood edges becoming unclear, objects merging one with another to become disjointed, uncertain presences looming.  They are landscapes and stories that feel familiar at first, but which become more curious and peculiar the longer you look.
