Out to Pasture
Paintings by Katelyn Chapman
Relying on rich history, storytelling, and the ephemeral quality of change that span past, present, and future tenses, Chapman primarily focuses on the function of the still life in rural spaces—both wild and domestic—as practical makeshifts and collections. Her work often toys with paradox and humor to buttress these themes through depictions of off-the-grid habits as they relate to living solely off the land. Out to Pasture is an exhibition that celebrates, honors, and riffs on the traditions of America’s rural South through its slower ways of life.
For Chapman, these works are largely inspired by and pay homage to the generations who came before her, matriarchal influences, and the hands of time. Finding wonder in the everyday, these paintings of rural pastimes provide perspective on larger societal issues in the American South that point to a past that can’t be thrown away, but instead lingers on into the present.
This exhibition is made possible in part by generous funding from The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, South Carolina Arts Commission, and South Arts.
