Stan O'Dell
Biography
Dramatic presentation of the figure is the focus of the artworks
of Stan O'Dell. His paintings, mostly of women and children,
are sufficiently accurate representations that the persons
depicted come to life for the viewer. At the same time the
execution of the paintings, especially their compositions
and brushwork, create a contemporary style. It is, however,
his masterful draftsmanship that sets his work apart.
Born in Missouri, he began his art training in high school
and at Drury College. He has lived in Oxford for thirty years
where he became a professor of clinical psychology. In mid-life
he gave up psychology to pursue painting and drawing full
time. His primary art education has been undergraduate and
graduate courses at the University of Mississippi where he
has attended weekly figure drawing classes for almost twenty
years. He also attends workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’
School.
Since 1988 he has exhibited at galleries in New Orleans,
Scottsdale, Memphis, Little Rock, Tupelo and Oxford. He has
received many awards for his work including recently winning
Best of Show at the Goff Juried Exhibition in Tupelo. He has
also won a purchase prize award at the Cotton District Arts
Festival Juried Exhibition in Starkville, and a merit award
at the Greenville Arts Council exhibition. The Scottsdale
Artists’ school regularly invites him to exhibit in
their “Best and Brightest” exhibition. His primary
representation is at Southside Gallery in Oxford.
